When we hear or read the word “responsibility,” we usually take it to refer to some duty assigned to us, some social or occupational duty. “Don’t forget, son: it’s your responsibility to walk Fido, rain or shine! You agreed to that when we bought him! So go get into your parka!” “Wake up, soldier! Cleaning those rifles is your responsibility!” Everyone was counting on you to do your job, and if you neglect it, a lot of people are going to have to take up the slack, and they’re not going to be very happy about it!
